Research with Design

The intrinsic element of the design

The intrinsic element of the design is the combination of Innovation, Imagination and Integration.

The Intrinsic Element of the Design
The Intrinsic Element of the Design

Innovation is to create business values. It involves improvement, breakthrough and transformation.

  • Improvement is to improve something that is historical or traditional product/service and develop something “new and improved” and with values.
  • Breakthrough is to create a substantial competitive edge which can demonstrate to customers the product/service are something beyond “new and improved”.
  • Transformation is to transform the product/service with a technology to create a new market or industry.

Imagination is to explore something that is not exist in the market, it could be something wild and crazy. The process is to combine irrelevant information, memory, impression or perhaps something that is even unreal and develop the best concept to suit the market needs and target customers.

Integration is systematically putting all the small components and elements together, structure them with strategies or based on market needs and develop a product/service that could be function well and profitable.

ZEEK founded in 2017, it is a new logistics company which provides all kinds of logistics needs and SaaS (Software as a Service) solutions. Its service pledge is to provide same day / instant delivery for food and parcel with 100% service fulfillment guarantee.

Zeek — Business Nature

Zeek by Innovation

Zeek has transformed a traditional parcel delivery company to a smart logistic startup specializing in food and parcel delivery and providing a total solution for their clients. Its SaaS solution is providing an online menu template, web-based in store panel for takeaway and delivery order handling, dashboard reporting for order and sales analysis, as well as payment gateway system, which can help to set up an online business within a very short period of time, especially in this competitive environment.

Zeek by Imagination

The founder and his management team are mainly from investment and IT industry. Without their crazy idea, it’s hard to transform a traditional parcel delivery company to an instant delivery company for food and parcel.

During the period of social movements and covid-19 in Hong Kong, Zeek provided a one-stop logistic solution for traditional shopping malls as well. Shoppers can simply shop at their tenant’s online shop and the mall will deliver the items to a designated address on the same day. It’s a totally breakthrough of the traditional shopping model. This point-to-point, makes immediate delivery upon purchase as usual, creating a win-win-win situation for shopping malls, tenants and shoppers.

Zeek by Integration

Zeek systematically puts all the below components together, structure them with strategies, based on market needs and competitive environment, offering high-quality B2B delivery service to individual, business, e-commerce and enterprise clients.

  • Instant/same day delivery service covers fresh food, food, parcel, lifestyle products
  • Strong delivery force, composed by walkers, riders, van and lorry to suit different delivery needs
  • Advanced IT support, big data analytics, cloud computing managing the routing, delivery schedule and team to provide stable delivery service
  • SaaS solution (online menu template, web-based in store panel, dashboard reporting, payment gateway)

My insights in this case study is I think Zeek did a great job in integration by providing a one-stop solution to their business clients in Hong Kong. However, Hong Kong is a pretty small city, and its expansion is limited. Moreover, high labour cost in Hong Kong, hence higher operating cost is a hindrance for a good revenue. If they want to be listed in Hong Kong in five years, they have to enhance their brand equity, generate more awareness and expand their business in other countries. Their holistic business solution provide an opportunity to expand their business in those developing countries with a larger population and market needs, like India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines and Taiwan.

In lesson 2, I learnt how to analyze all the intrinsic element in design and build up my analytical thinking, after putting all the small components together, you can understand the current situation and problem that a company is facing or will encounter in the coming future.
